Get up, and Get Moving

When I work with adolescent clients who struggle with depression and anxiety, they often talk about having a lack of energy and a lack of motivation. One of the things that I say to my clients who are in this situation is “When you feel like doing nothing, it is the best time to do something.” I always encourage clients to get up and get moving, even if it from their bed to their couch. They made progress in that moment and may have moved further than they did the day before. I want my clients to feel the natural benefits of being physically active. The great thing about physical activity is that you can do it just about anywhere you go. You can start small and work your way up. You do not have to join a gym, or follow a specific plan, you just have to move.

We know from studies and research that exercise also promotes positive changes in the brain to help improve mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and attention deficit- hyperactivity disorder.[1] We also know that while you are exercising your body releases endorphins that act as a natural antidepressant.[2] Physical activity is also a great way to practice mindfulness, clear your thoughts, reduce stress, and improve your self-esteem.  In a 2018 study based on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System survey, research showed that individuals who participate in physical activity experience nearly fifty percent fewer days of poor mental health. The study found that people who participated in team sports, cycling, and aerobic and gym activities and those worked out around 45- minutes a few times a week had better mental health.[3]

Because we know the mind-body connection is so important, Atlas Youth Outreach will be hosting the Running Toward A Brighter Tomorrow Virtual 5k. You can run, walk, hike, jog, or ride the 3.1 miles from anywhere at any time starting on Friday, October 23  and ending on Sunday October, 25. Like I always tell my clients, it is always good to get up and get moving. By participating in the 5K, you are helping us provide therapeutic and support services to teenagers in Jefferson County so we can help them navigate their path to a brighter tomorrow.
